Autism Assessment

What Is Autism (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and experience the world. Because autism presents differently in each person, early professional assessment is vital to understand the child’s unique developmental needs.

Common Indicators of Autism in Children:

  • Delayed or absent speech
  • Difficulty with eye contact or social engagement
  • Repetitive behaviours or fixations
  • Sensory sensitivity or emotional overwhelm
  • Difficulty with changes in routine
  • Limited peer interaction or imaginative play

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Research consistently shows that early diagnosis improves long-term outcomes. Starting support as soon as possible means your child can access interventions, school support, and strategies designed around their strengths.

Our private autism assessments provide:

  • A clear explanation of your child’s neurodevelopmental profile
  • Recognition of traits, behaviours, and sensory needs
  • Professional guidance for parents and carers
  • Reports recognised by GPs, schools, and EHCP processes

Step-by-Step Autism Diagnostic Pathway

Our autism assessment process follows the highest clinical standards and is structured to ensure a comprehensive understanding of your child’s needs:

STEP 1
CHILD OBSERVATION (ADOS-2)

A structured Autism assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2). This face-to-face assessment allows our clinicians to observe your child’s communication, social interaction, behaviour, play, and emotional responses in a supportive and structured environment. Where clinically appropriate, elements of the observation may be completed remotely.

"

STEP 2
NURSERY / SCHOOL INFORMATION

We gather information from your child’s nursery, school, or educational setting to build a fuller picture of how they present across different environments. Educational feedback helps us understand strengths, challenges, social interactions, learning needs, and any support strategies already in place.

"

STEP 3
PARENT INTERVIEW (ADI-R)

A detailed and collaborative conversation between a specialist clinician and a parent or carer using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). This provides a comprehensive developmental history and helps us understand your child’s communication style, behaviour patterns, relationships, interests, and everyday experiences.

"

STEP 4
MULTIDISCIPLINARY REVIEW

Your child’s case is reviewed by our experienced multidisciplinary team, following recognised clinical frameworks for Autism assessment. The team carefully considers information gathered from observations, parent interviews, educational settings, and any relevant external professionals to ensure a thorough and balanced understanding of your child’s needs.

"

STEP 5
FEEDBACK ABOUT THE DIAGNOSIS

Once the assessment process is complete, we arrange a remote feedback session with parents or carers. During this appointment, we explain the outcome of the assessment, discuss the clinical findings, answer any questions, and provide guidance on recommendations and next steps.

"

STEP 6
WRITTEN DIAGNOSTIC REPORT

Following the feedback session, you will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions where appropriate, and tailored recommendations to support your child at home, in education, and in everyday life.

Report Recognition & Educational Support

Our comprehensive diagnostic reports are routinely accepted by schools, GPs, local authorities, and other educational settings. Families regularly tell us that our reports have helped them successfully secure Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for their children.

Parents also report that schools find our recommendations practical, clear, and easy to implement within the classroom environment, helping teachers and support staff better understand and support a child’s individual needs. Our goal is not only to provide an accurate diagnosis, but also to equip families with meaningful guidance that can support positive outcomes at home, in education, and beyond.

Girls, Masking & Complex Presentations

Autism does not always present in the same way. Many children, particularly girls, learn to mask or camouflage their difficulties, making Autism harder to recognise in everyday settings. Our clinicians have extensive experience identifying more subtle presentations of Autism, including children who appear socially confident but experience significant challenges beneath the surface.

We also specialise in assessing complex presentations, including children with co-occurring conditions, high-functioning Autism, and difficulties that may present as anxiety, emotional dysregulation, or school refusal. Our thorough multidisciplinary approach helps ensure that important indicators are not overlooked.

In-Clinic and Remote Options Available

At ASD Child Ltd, we understand that flexibility and timeliness are essential, especially when you’re seeking support for your child.

  • Urgent Remote Appointments: We offer expedited remote autism assessments where clinically appropriate. These are designed for families who need answers quickly and may not be able to attend in person straight away.
  • In-Clinic Observation: One face-to-face visit is typically required for the ADOS-2 observation. This can be arranged at one of our London clinics:
    • The Vale Practice, 64 Grove Vale, East Dulwich, SE22 8DT
    • The Space, 12B St. Mary’s Rd, Ealing, W5 5ES
  • The remainder of the assessment (parent interviews, feedback sessions) is conducted remotely via secure video consultation for convenience and accessibility.

Our blended approach allows families from across the South East, including Brighton, Surrey, Kent and Portsmouth, to access our services quickly and with minimal disruption.
